5 Reasons to Spend Spring Break in Las Vegas

Every spring, college students flock to the Florida beaches for spring break. The savviest students, though, know that the best destination for a mid-term vacation is in Las Vegas, where the party goes on around the clock, all through the year. During spring break season, it gets even wilder, as hotels, venues, and casinos cater to the college crowd with specials to make the week even more memorable. If you’re thinking about your spring break destination this year, forget the beach, and consider all the reasons why Vegas has considerably more bang for your buck.

1. Pools

You won’t even miss the beach with all of the pool options in Las Vegas. In fact, some of the pools recreate a beach experience that’s even better than the real thing. Mandalay Beach at Mandalay Bay has tons of sand, a wave pool, and private cabanas with bar service. You can even float down the Lazy River while sipping a massive tropical drink. The adults-only Wet Republic at MGM Grand is like a combination pool and nightclub, though the party begins in the daytime with state-of-the-art DJs and an enormous bar. Marquee Dayclub at the Cosmopolitan has three full stories of cabanas with private infinity pools for small groups, and a party deck that hosts world-renowned house music DJs when you feel like joining the crowd.

2. Cocktails

The whole purpose of spring break is to unwind from the grueling college schedule, and unwinding is a whole lot easier with a cool drink. Nobody does drinks like Las Vegas, where the number and variety of bars is legendary. You won’t have to look very far to find one–there are even swim-up bars at many of the pools. If classic cocktails are your thing, try the Vesper Bar at the Cosmopolitan, where you can drink like James Bond, or try Frankie’s Tiki Room for elaborate, fruit-filled concoctions. (They even have specials for anyone wearing a Hawaiian shirt.) Beer-drinkers needn’t go thirsty: there are enough pubs on The Strip to manage a pub crawl that could last all week without repeating a single watering hole.

3. Shows

Some spring break venues leave it up to you to entertain yourself, but not Vegas. When you need a break from all the parties, you can sit back and watch a show. Production groups like Cirque du Soleil and the Blue Man Group know how to entertain, or if your taste runs more to magic, you can nab tickets to Criss Angel or Penn & Teller. Too tame for your taste? Check event listings for shows with a more adult theme. Don’t forget concerts: world-class acts perform in Vegas on a regular basis here. In 2014. Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Elvis Costello with the Roots, Bruno Mars, and Jane’s Addiction are just a few of the artists appearing in Vegas this spring.

4. Nightclubs

The best thing about nightclubs in Las Vegas is that there’s so much competition. Each club strives to be more over-the-top than the next in an effort to get your attention. The end result is that almost anywhere you go, you’ll be dazzled. Check out Light at Mandalay Bay for one of the most visually stunning dance floors, featuring an immense LED structure that’s never the same twice. TAO Las Vegas is a nightclub you’ll never want to leave, with multiple levels including a restaurant and a pool club, go-go dancers, private skyboxes, and a steady stream of celebrity clientele. Moon Nightclub at the Palms gets its name thanks to an enormous retractable roof above the dance floor that lets you see the stars while you dance. And these clubs are just start: Hyde, Vanity, Pure, Hakkasan–they’re all amazing club venues. Try to hit them all!

5. Hotels

No matter how hard you try to keep your eyes open, you’ll have to sleep sometime. Luckily for you, hotels are easy to come by in Las Vegas, and not just any hotels. Plenty of them cater to the spring break vibe you’ll be looking for. The Hard Rock Hotel is made for those who come to Vegas to party, so you won’t get any funny looks. The party pool, aptly named Rehab, is one of the craziest in town. The Hooters Casino Hotel is everything the name implies. For one of the best hotel deals on the Strip, try the Luxor–with eight bars and a nightclub attached, you might not even need to leave. If you need a lower room rate, there are plenty of deals off the Strip, too. Just make sure you call a cab when it’s finally time to rest.

If those aren’t enough reasons to spend spring break in Vegas, then here are a few bonuses. Many hotels boast a free buffet, so you won’t have to go broke on food. You can save your money for VIP service at one of the clubs while you make like a high-roller. Also, check for deals: lots of hotels and venues offer spring break specials. The only question you should be asking yourself is why you haven’t booked yet.
